Grow your garden in Costa RicaObviously you'll want to have a nice garden, when you own your lot in Costa Rica.
The size of your garden depends of course on your ambition and the size of your lot. Here's an example of what you could have if you can spend 1/4 of an acre for that purpose. The following list assumes 2 trees of each of 11 kinds, a total of 22 trees:
- Spacing: 8m x 8m
- Orange ("Naranja")
- Lemon ("Limon Mandarina")
- Lime ("Limon Criollo")
- Grapefruit ("Toronja")
- Soursop ("Guanabana")
- Spacing: 7m x 7m
- Cashew ("Marañón")
- Lychee ("Mamón Chino")
- Star Fruit ("Carambola")
- Spacing: 4m x 4m
- Coconut, dwarf ("Coco Enano")
- Spacing: 3m x 3m

The above is just an example, perhaps you'd want to include others such as mango, macadamia, mandarin orange, passion fruit, tamarind, etc. A visit to a tropical plant nursery is recommended.
You might of course also like to plant some pineapples, melon, watermelon, peppers, garlic, etc...
In addition you'll want to have flowers like Hibiscus, Bouganvillea, Lobster Claw, Iris, Ixora, Ginger, etc.
There are 2 excellent plant nurseries nearby: Vivero Tropical in Paraíso, Esparza (they have 200,000 fruit trees) and Vivero Solera in Tambor (it's like visiting a botanical garden).
- And if you want a full-time gardener to look after your garden, it'll cost you about $2800 a year (including insurance, pension, etc.). |
