A two hour drive takes you from San José to Puntarenas (A new highway is expected to cut time in half). If you prefer to let somebody else do the driving get to Avenida 12, Calle 16 and take one of the comfortable modern buses that service the route from downtown San José (approximately $2.50), then a taxi ($1.20) or a bus ($0.18) to the ferry terminal.

The ferry from Puntarenas to Playa Naranjo makes 4 round trips daily. This pleasant trip ($1.60 without car, $11.50 for car and driver), takes a little more than an hour and provides a delightful view of the Gulf of Nicoya and many islands (make sure to take the ferry to Playa Naranjo and not the one that goes to Paquera and leaves from the same dock).

The ferry departure times from Puntarenas to Playa Naranjo are: 6 am, 10 am, 2:20 pm, 7 pm.
And back from Playa Naranjo to Puntarenas: 7:30 am, 12:30 pm, 5 pm and 9 pm.

From Playa Naranjo it is a short drive (9 Km) to Bahia Gigante. If you don't drive a car, you can get a private taxi service to Bahia Gigante for approximately $6.00
